President of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announces 8 new temples

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — President Russell M. Nelson used the Women’s Session of the 189th Semi-annual General Conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to announce that the Church will build eight new temples.
This was the first time that the Church has made such an announcement during the women’s session of general conference, held in the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
According to the website ChurchofJesusChrist.org, which disseminates official information for the Church, President Nelson’s announcement brings the total number of operating temples and temples announced or under construction to 217 worldwide.
President Nelson said two of the new temples will be built in the home state of the Church. Those locations are Orem and Taylorsville, Utah.
Other temples will be built in Freetown, Sierra Leone, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, in Bentonville, Arkansas, Badolod, Philippines, in McAllen, Texas, and in Coban, Guatemala.
“As the Church grows,” President Nelson said, “more temples will be built so that more families can have access to that greatest of all blessings, that of eternal life.”
President Nelson was the final speaker of the women’s session. Before closing the session, President Nelson said, “We regard a temple as the most sacred structure in the Church. Whenever plans are announced to construct a new temple, it becomes an important part of our history.”
Since he became President of the Church, President Nelson has announced the creation of 35 new temples.
