Salt Lake carjacking suspect dead, investigation continues

Ty Goudy, a man who claimed to have been the victim of the Saturday carjacking near downtown Salt Lake, described his ordeal. The carjacking was caught in the video above by Clayton Cundy.
Goudy said he pulled up to a man on the 600 south off-ramp waving a gun.
“Guy fires a shot in the air. Kind of warning everyone… We’re boxed in. Next thing you know the man’s standing at the hood of my vehicle with his hand on the hood and the gun pointing directly at my face. And he’s looking at me and he’s yelling, he says ‘give me your car’,” Goudy said.
In a series of Instagram videos, Goudy said he was bracing to be shot and all he could think about was his wife and daughter.
He and his friend were able to get away by surrendering the car.
In his Instagram videos, Goudy described desperation in the suspect’s eyes and shared a message of compassion saying that he didn’t know what the man was going through.

SALT LAKE CITY — Police have identified the suspect who shot at police as 38-year-old Matthew Cieslak, an Idaho native.
Two police officers are on administrative leave and the Salt Lake City Police Department continues to investigate after an armed carjacking and an officer-involved shooting in Salt Lake City on Saturday.
Police received a call about a man attempting to carjack a vehicle around 6 p.m. near 600 South and I-15 in downtown Salt Lake City. It was the suspect’s second attempt at a carjacking that day.
After an unsuccessful traffic stop, police said that shots were exchanged between the suspect and two officers in the area of 220 South Orange Street. The suspect died on the scene.
As an investigation continues, Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown is praising the officers who were involved.
“Tonight, two of our officers found themselves facing great danger as they protected our community. I am grateful for their heroic actions,” said Brown. “Our police officers reacted quickly and professionally to a public safety threat. Their actions demonstrated great courage and likely prevented any further injuries or violence in our community.”
The two officers involved in the shooting remain on administrative leave.
