FBI warns of scammers posing as kidnappers and sending digitally altered proof-of-life photos

SALT LAKE CITY — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is warning the public about altered photos scammers can use to pose as kidnappers.

In a release from the FBI, they warn that criminals are using digitally altered photos found on social media and other public websites to use as proof-of-life pictures or videos. Scammers will pose as kidnappers and tell victims they have a friend or loved one and ask for ransom payments.

The FBI says victims will generally be contacted by text.  The FBI says the people who are most at risk are those who may have posted about a missing loved one.

They say to protect yourself, take some of the following actions:

• Take a minute to think about any alarming messages… scammers will often try to create a false sense of urgency.
• Always try to contact your loved one who has allegedly been kidnapped.
• Establish a code word now to confirm identities.
• Screenshot and record proof-of-life photos and videos whenever possible.
• Avoid giving personal information to strangers while traveling.

They say if you believe you are a victim of this scam to file a report with the FBI at the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
