Thomas R. Lee steps down from Utah Supreme Court

SALT LAKE CITY – The associate chief justice for the Utah Supreme Court, Thomas R. Lee, announced he will depart from his position at the end of the month. 

Lee looked back fondly on his time in the Utah Supreme Court. He also announced his plans for after he resigns from the position.

“I will be stepping down from my judicial position on June 30, after 12 years in the most interesting, fulfilling, and challenging position I’ve held in my 30+ years in the law,” Lee said. “I will miss it but it’s time for a new challenge.”

Gov. Gary Herbert appointed Lee to the Utah Supreme Court in 2010. Gov. Spencer Cox will nominate Lee’s replacement, then the Utah Senate will have he opportunity to confirm, or deny, Cox’s nomination.

“On July 1, I will begin to develop a law and linguistics consulting firm and an appellate boutique firm,” Lee said, regarding his plans after stepping down from the Utah Supreme Court.

Sen. Mike Lee released a statement regarding his brother’s resignation from the Utah Supreme Court.

“My brother Tom is truly a model jurist and public servant, and has fulfilled his role on the Utah Supreme Court with an unparalleled commitment to excellence and professionalism over the last twelve years,” Sen. Mike Lee said. “He’s a pioneer and expert in the use of linguistic theory and tools in interpreting the language of the law.”
