FILLMORE, Utah – Firefighters from several agencies are trying to knock down two large wildfires that sparked after a lightning strike in central Utah over the weekend.

The 2,000-acre Goat Canyon Fire is burning between Nephi and Scipio and officials are saying that it is 25% contained. About 100 firefighters from several state and federal agencies have been battling the flames since Sunday.

Officials say that a group of hotshots called in to help fight the blaze have also been instrumental in helping contain the fire.

The other fire burning in central Utah has been named the Meadow Creek Fire it is currently burning off I-15 near Fillmore has been a harder challenge for firefighters.

Millard County Commissioner Dean Draper says the fire also started on Sunday and quickly grew to about 1,200 acres.

“It’s already gone through the sagebrush, and [it may] cause flash flooding when we get a decent storm. There’s not going to be anything to hold the water,” Draper says.

The fire is burning close to the city of Meadow’s watershed.

Firefighters were able to hold the Clay Fire near Oak Creek to 45 acres.
