SALT LAKE CITY — Potential students applying to the University of Utah won’t have to submit scores from the ACT or SAT standardized tests for a few more years. The students can submit these scores if they’d like, but it’s not required.

The school announced it is extending a pilot program that began in 2020, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their goal is to broaden access to the school, and to continue to study what effect these test scores have on the application process.

The decision process is now more centered on grade point average (GPA) and the rigor of classes taken in high school.

The University said they’ve received a record number of applications for Fall 2022 classes.

The American College Testing (ACT) score purports to exhibit a student’s educational development in the subjects of English, mathematics, reading, and scientific reasoning. Each section is scored individually, and then a composite score is reported.

The SAT, or Scholastic Assessment Test, is a standardized test and also purports to assess a student’s college readiness.
