West Jordan and Mountain Ridge High Schools move online after virus spike

WEST JORDAN, Utah — Students at both West Jordan and Mountain Ridge High Schools will not return to the classroom Wednesday morning. The Jordan District has moved both schools to online learning after seeing a spike in COVID-19 cases at the schools.
The move was made after the Salt Lake County Health Department reported 22 active cases at Mountain Ridge High School and 26 cases at West Jordan High School. Currently, there are 235 active cases across the district and 2,123 individuals currently in quarantine according to the district.
During an emergency meeting on Tuesday night, the school board voted to cancel classes on Wednesday to allow for teachers and students to prepare for the move to online classes.
“One thing that we are learning is that, the majority of these cases, students are not catching the virus at school,” said Bryan Dunford, Jordan School District board president.
“I think the protective measures at our schools are working. Our evidence that we’re seeing suggests that students are not catching the virus – they’re bringing it from home.”
According to the district, they expect to return to in-person learning after fall break on October 27. They say grab-and-go lunches will continue to be available at both schools from 11 a.m. – noon.
