West Jordan City Council to discuss aerial fireworks ban

WEST JORDAN — A special meeting tonight of the West Jordan City Council will address whether aerial fireworks should be banned for the rest of the year.
West Jordan Deputy Fire Chief Reed Scharman says on the night of the Fourth of July, they had 54 field fires just in their area. And the VECC dispatch center had 288 calls per hour from 9:30 to midnight.
“We had a fire where there was a 15 minute response time to get to a fire call. That’s not our normal standard of operation and it’s not what the public sees or expects,” he said.
“We help each other, we can send a unit over and we can cover it. The problem in this case, is there simply aren’t any more units available to go and cover,” he said.
Cottonwood Heights has already banned the fireworks in their city, and Salt Lake County is talking about it for unincorporated areas.
