SALT LAKE CITY — If you’re looking for some local theater to enjoy in June, look no further! Here are five shows, one a first-time debut, for your consideration.

1. Now playing until June 22: ‘Disney’s The Little Mermaid’ at the SCERA Center for the Arts

Located in Orem, the SCERA Center for the Arts is putting their spin on the beloved Disney tale, “The Little Mermaid.”

Chase Ramsey directs this show, with music direction from Rex Kocherhans and choreography by Janessa Ramsey.

2. JUNE 14-19: ‘Rock of Ages’ at Ogden’s Ziegfeld Theater

Tom Cruise may not show up in this version, but you’ll still get the full “rock n’ roll fairytale” in this performance at Ogden’s Ziegfeld Theater.

Following the tale of a legendary (albeit fictional) Hollywood venue, this Jukebox Musical brings some favorite 1980s classic rock songs to the stage. Cassidy Wixon-Heise directs.

3. June 15: ‘Tea for Three: Lady Bird, Pat & Betty’ at Salt Lake City Public Library

An Emmy-Award winning actress, Elaine Bromka, will star in this one-woman, Off-Broadway performance about three first ladies: Lady Bird Johnson, Pat Nixon and Betty Ford.

This production has critical acclaims from the New York Times and even a former White House Press Secretary, according to the show’s website.

This specific production at the Salt Lake City Public Library will be a hybrid event. They’ll first show the filmed virtual performance, followed with a live Zoom session with the star and co-writer herself, Elaine Bromka. And, it’s completely free.

4. June 24-July 6: ‘Let’s Go! The John Powell Story’ at the Outlaw Trail Theater

Debut alert! “Let’s Go!” is the story of John Wesley Powell. 155 years ago, Powell set off to explore the Green and Colorado rivers. The musical follows that journey, narrated by Powell himself. It will show at Vernal’s Outlaw Trail Theater.

(Outlaw Trail Theater)

This is the first-time debut of this musical, “featuring barn burners, waltzes and ballads.” Written by Jonathan Stearmer, the play also features music by Alan Doyle.

5. June 14-22: ‘Silent Sky’ at the Empress Theatre

Showing at Magna’s Empress Theatre, “Silent Sky” follows the life and work of Henrietta Leavitt, who, in the early 1900s, was barred from exploring her passion for astronomy due to her gender. According to the theatre’s official plot summary, she joins a group of women acting as “human computers,” charting the stars for a renowned male astronomer.

“Silent Sky” is written by Lauren Gunderson and directed by Beth Bruner.
