Barbie The Movie: In Concert features all-women orchestra, coming to Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Barbie the Movie: In Concert, is coming to Utah. 

On Monday, Live Nation and Mattel announced the live music experience will play the Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater on July 18.

The experience will feature a showing of the film accompanied by an all-women orchestra. Orchestrator and executive producer Macy Schmidt will conduct The Barbieland Sinfonietta. 

Additionally, a majority of the women in The Barbieland Sinfonietta are women of color, according to the press release. 

“Music lends so much heart and excitement to the Barbie film; between the stunning and clever orchestral score and the upbeat iconic pop soundtrack, music is carrying us through the story,” said Schmidt.

Schmidt founded The Sinfonietta in 2020.  The inaugural, New York-based group is called The Broadway Sinfonietta.

In late-2023, a second group, The Hollywood Sinfonietta, was established in Los Angeles, per the company’s website. 

The Sinfonietta also serves as a production company. 

“I am particularly excited to be partnering with Mattel,” Schmidt said, “as I have long been inspired by Barbie’s purpose statement: ‘to inspire the limitless potential in every girl.’

“It couldn’t be more aligned to have an all-women orchestra performing this film, bringing its message to life onstage.’” 

According to the press release, Barbie the Movie: In Concert’s crew will also feature an all-women team of production and technical professionals.
