SALT LAKE CITY — Halloween is days away and there are a few ways to make your child’s costume safer.

The American Red Cross of Utah and Thanksgiving Point said costumes from Teletubbies to Freddy Krueger should follow a few guidelines.

First, make the costume visible to drivers by adding reflective tape.

The second is to consider face paint instead of masks. Masks can make it hard to breathe and limit what a child sees.

It’s also important for witches’ skirts and vampire capes to be non-flammable since many houses decorate their doorsteps with lit candles.

The Salt Lake City Police Department has a few more tips to keep your child safe aside from their costume.

For at-home Halloween safety, SLPD said to keep your exterior lights on, walkways free of obstruction and don’t allow anyone into your home you don’t know.

Some trick-or-treat safety tips include planning out a route, never taking shortcuts across alleys, backyards, or fields, and avoiding unfamiliar homes.
