DRAPER, Utah — The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium has invited children to participate in an art and essay contest to win a spot in the aquarium’s time capsule.

Additionally, the winners will be invited to present their work at a private time capsule ceremony, according to a press release from the aquarium.

The contest is open to children in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Submissions are due on Jan. 15. Those with children interested in participating can visit the aquarium’s website for more information

The aquarium will be burying a “carefully curated” time capsule at the construction site of its new Sam and Aline Skaggs Science Learning Center. The new 120,000-square-foot learning space is expected to open in early 2025, according to the aquarium.

“Including our community’s children in our time capsule isn’t just about preserving the past; it’s a vote of confidence in an optimistic future. Their words and art symbolize the dreams and commitment of a generation tasked with caring for our living planet. In their creations, we glimpse a future where our world’s wonder is cherished and protected by tomorrow’s leaders,” said Karmel Harper, the aquarium’s director of marketing and public relations.

Celebrating 25 years

According to the Aquarium, this year marks the 25th anniversary of its predecessor, the Aqua Van. It was launched in 1999.

Later, the aquarium was established at The Gateway in 2004. It moved to its current location in Draper in 2014.

The aquarium does more than display fish. According to its website, the aquarium has participated in conservation projects.

It has worked to raise money for sea turtle conservation. The project works to protect the Pawikan Sea Turtle from extinction.

According to the Pawikan Project, the turtles are threatened by poaching, pollution, and habitat destruction.

Additionally, it has worked with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums on its Species Survival Plan Projects.
