Ogden celebrates 175 years with festivities

OGDEN – The city of Ogden is celebrating its 175th birthday with festivities and historical documents never before displayed to the public.
Ogden became a city on Feb. 6, 1851, back when there were more cows than people in Weber County.
It was just the third city incorporated west of the Mississippi River, right behind San Francisco and Salt Lake City.
To celebrate the city’s history and growth, the Ogden Union Station is hosting an event with food trucks, live music, free entry to museums and for the first time, a chance for visitors to see the original incorporation documents of the city from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Church History Department.
“It’s basically the constitution for our city,” said Museums at Union Station Administrator Hope Eggett. “The territorial government at the time, the state of Deseret, officially gave Ogden city the authority to govern itself. It’s a really interesting document to read.”
The 175th birthday celebration will be Friday at Union Station from 6 to 9 p.m., alongside the First Friday Art Stroll.

“This is a free opportunity to come and learn more about our city and all of the work we’ve put into it over the years,” Eggett said.
