SALT LAKE CITY — On Oct. 19, Shades Brewing will host a Halloween event to raise awareness of the environmental benefits of riding public transit.
Increased public transit ridership could reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, especially during Utah’s inversion season.
During ‘Sips of the Living Dead,’ participants are invited to ride TRAX to participating breweries. Shades Brewing said the zombie-themed ‘TRAX crawl’ was designed to demonstrate that using public transit can be fun and efficient.
“It’s about showing people how easy it is to reduce their carbon footprint by using TRAX, especially as inversion season starts to impact air quality,” said Shades Brewing owner Alexandra Ortiz.
Three breweries near Salt Lake’s Central Pointe Station will be participating. Participants can visit Shades Brewing, Salt Fire Brewing, and Chappell Brewing. Additionally, Brewvies, a cinema pub near the 600 S. Station, will participate.
Brewvies Cinema Pub will present a 4:30 p.m. screening of “Night of the Living Dead.” It will also host a photo booth and costume contest.
Attendees will receive a free ticket to a later movie showing.
According to the event website, attendees can pick up a “Zombie Passport” at any participating location. Acquiring three stamps within the passport will make participants eligible to enter Salt Fire Brewing’s 7:30 p.m. prize drawing.
More information can be found on the event website.
The benefits of public transit
A 2022 Environmental Protection Agency report found that transportation created the largest amount of greenhouse gas emissions. It accounted for 28% of emissions caused by economic sectors.
World Wildlife Foundation said greenhouse gas emissions accumulate in the atmosphere, leading to warmer temperatures, shifting seasons, and disappearing sea ice. If they do not decrease by the middle of the current century, the consequences could be disastrous.
A 2023 World Resources Institute report found that in comparison to driving, riding public transit could help individuals lower their greenhouse gas emissions by up to two-thirds per kilometer.
In addition to benefits for the climate, a study published by the National Institute of Health found that reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and pollution can lead to decreased cases of several illnesses, including heart disease, types of cancer, and diabetes.
“With rising concerns about air quality, particularly during inversion season, Shades Brewing hopes to show how convenient and beneficial it can be to take TRAX to popular spots in Salt Lake City,” read the Shades Brewing press release.
