Law enforcement lifts shelter-in-place order, arrests suspect in Park City

PARK CITY – Law enforcement issued a shelter-in-place in Park City Sunday morning due to an ‘active situation.’

The shelter-in-place order was lifted later Sunday morning, after the Summit County Sheriff’s Office reported a 40-year-old suspect was in custody, according to a Facebook post.

On Facebook, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office reported law enforcement was responding to an incident near Trailside Park, and issued the order due to an “active situation involving a potentially armed individual.”

“All residents in the area are urged to shelter in place and report any suspicious persons in the area to 911 immediately,” the Sheriff’s Office said on a Facebook post.

Suspect in custody

The sheriff’s office said at approximately 5:30 a.m., deputies responded to an activated alarm at the Park City Gun Club.

Deputies reported hearing gunshots “coming from inside the building,” and “observed multiple shots being fired from inside the building toward the outside.”

A man reportedly exited the business, got into a vehicle, and fled from deputies. Deputies attempted a traffic stop, and a pursuit ensued near Trailside Bike Park, according to the sheriff’s office.

The suspect reportedly crashed the vehicle and “failed to comply with commands to surrender.”

“This led to a standoff with the SWAT team that lasted approximately one hour and twenty minutes,” the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect, described as a 40-year-old Utah resident, surrendered and was taken into police custody.

One deputy with the sheriff’s office reportedly sustained minor injuries, the sheriff’s office said, but no further injuries were reported.
