Brigham City Police investigating fatal hit-and-run

SALT LAKE CITY — A woman was hit and killed in Brigham City late Monday night, and police said the next morning that they had not identified a driver.

The Brigham City Police Department announced that officers were dispatched to reports of a “person down” in the intersection of 850 South and 425 East just before 8 p.m. When police arrived, they found a 65-year-old woman with serious injuries, and determined she had been hit by a vehicle, the statement said.

“The victim was assessed and treated on scene by Brigham City Fire Department paramedics, then transported to the Brigham City Community Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased,” Brigham City PD said.

Brigham City Detective Crystal Beck said her department was investigating the incident as an automobile homicide.

Family members told KSL that the victim was Angie Kjar. A GoFundMe* set up to cover funeral costs for her says she was out for her evening walk at the time she was struck.

Police investigation begins

Detectives interviewed nearby residents, “but no involved drivers or vehicles have been identified or located.”

Investigators were still out Tuesday morning, trying to piece together anything that might help them find the driver who hit and killed the woman. It’s got neighbors in disbelief.

“It’s very sad, very tragic, I don’t know how someone could walk away from that,” said neighbor Lauren Haramoto.

“That’s a sad situation… I’m so sorry for her and her family, I really am,” said neighbor Cindy Peters.

“If you are a witness, we’ve got some very distraught family members as you can imagine and, we are trying our best to get justice for them and bring this case to a conclusion and hold this person responsible,” said Chief Chad Reyes, Brigham City Police Department.

Neighbors said they are not surprised someone here lost their life at this location. They told KSL speeding cars are an ongoing problem here.

“They go right down that road, they just hit the gas and you can hear them in the house,” Haramoto said.

“You can try to back out of your driveway and they’ll come speeding up behind you and honk at you,” Peters said.

Police hope someone saw the driver or the victim out Monday night, and comes forward.

“Probably some neighbors in the area recognize her walking around, she’s done it for years. If they saw her, maybe can give us her path that we can trace back and try to develop more evidence for this case. We are really asking for any kind of help, any kind of call,” Reyes said.
