SOUTH SALT LAKE CITY — A gas leak in South Salt Lake prompted mandatory evacuations on Sunday evening after it caused a fire near West Temple.
Fire officials asked anyone between 3300 South and 3500 South and West Temple and 200 West to evacuate. The evacuations lasted all night. Officials announced the order would finally be lifted at approximately 7:30 a.m.
South Salt Lake Fire Department said crews were extinguishing a truck that caught fire from a fallen power line, when they noticed the ground was also on fire.
An evacuation shelter was set in place at 3805 S. Main Street, with the Utah Transit Authority implementing a bus bridge between the Millcreek to Meadowbrook stations.
The South Salt Lake Fire Department confirmed the fire was at a “controlled burn” late Sunday night, with no gas readings east of West Temple.
