LOGAN – A student dorm at Utah State University was evacuated Thursday night due to a “hazmat situation.”
The situation impacted those living at Mountain View Towers, according to the Logan Fire Department. University police said at approximately 8:15 p.m., students on the first floor reported smelling fumes.
As they evacuated, students said they received a text message from the school saying there was a chemical spill on the first floor and asked if anyone was still in the Mountain View Towers to shelter in place while crews investigated.
A student who lives in the tower, Calvin Winn, said the school placed those who smelled the fumes into a bus as a precaution in case they could spread contamination. He also said in the last week, there was a fire drill, and then two subsequent alarms that went off — one when the basement flooded and another when a radiator blew.
On Thursday, Winn said apparently something was wrong with the ventilation system, and he wasn’t expecting to get back in the building that night.
“Apparently it’s something really really serious,” he said. “So I hope everyone is OK.”
Utah State University did not immediately provide further information.
