Man killed after being hit by semi while walking on I-84 near Snowville

SNOWVILLE, Box Elder County — A man was killed while walking on Interstate 84 near Snowville Thursday night, police said.
The Department of Public Safety said a 48-year-old pedestrian was hit near mile marker four at approximately 7:45 p.m. while walking in the eastbound lane.
The man was identified later by authorities as Matthew R. Kimball, 48, of South Ogden.
“Near milepost four, a driver of a Peterbuilt Semi saw the pedestrian at the last second and swerved left to avoid contact. The pedestrian was struck by the side view mirror and knocked to the ground,” DPS said. “A second Peterbuilt semi was directly behind the first and was unable to stop or see what happened ahead of him. As a result, the second semi hit the pedestrian. The pedestrian died from the impact.”
The department said the pedestrian had spoken to police before being hit. An officer was working at a nearby traffic accident when the man walked up to him and asked for a ride, because his car had broken down nearby. DPS said the officer told the man to return to his car and wait inside until he finished working that accident, but instead, the 48-year-old walked several miles down the road before being killed.
