UPDATE: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Wednesday that President R. Tyler Wallis had been released from the hospital after being shot in his home on Saturday.
“President and Sister Wallis express sincere gratitude for the prayers offered in their behalf and look forward to continuing their service as mission leaders in the Mexico Mexico City West Mission,” The Church said.
The previous story on the shooting follows:
SALT LAKE CITY — The mission president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Mexico City West Mission is said to be in stable condition after he was shot in his home Saturday.
“President R. Tyler Wallis was shot once by an intruder during an attempted robbery in their home at approximately 2 a.m. local time,” Church spokesperson Sam Penrod said.
Penrod said President Wallis was responding well to treatment in an intermediate care unit in Mexico City. His wife, Sister Elizabeth Wallis, was not injured and was being supported by the Mexico Area Presidency.
“The Church is cooperating with local authorities as they investigate the incident. All missionaries are safe,” Penrod said.
Penrod released the following statement Saturday:
“Our prayers are with President and Sister Wallis, their family members and the missionaries during this challenging time. The Church is grateful for the thousands of missionaries and their leaders serving as volunteers throughout the world to extend the love and peace that the Savior Jesus Christ offers to each of us.”
KSL TV spoke with Emma Jones, who is the sister of a missionary in the Mexico City West Mission — Elder Joshua Jaggi. She said she was able to get in contact with her brother today.
“He just basically told us it’s a miracle — as traumatic as it is — being shot point blank with a gun by an intruder in your home and having it miss all the vital organs… it’s such a blessing that he’s alive,” Jones said.
President and Sister Wallis, who are from Orlando, Florida, have been serving in Mexico City since July 1st.
Sister Wallis is a Provo native and is a certified life coach.
“To have something like that is just so terrifying, but they’re very strong people, they’re a strong couple. That’s something Elder Jaggi has shared with us over and over again is they’re just resilient, happy people, they’re motivated, and I think they’re going to take this and just continue to move forward with faith,” she added.
