MURRAY – Murray High School will transition to remote learning following a fire at the school Friday morning, according to the Murray School District.
The fire started in the school’s dust-collecting system, which is next to the wood shop room. The fire was extinguished quickly, and “the response was quick, as we practice, and all faculty, staff and students were evacuated safely to our football field,” the school district said in a statement.
Due to the cleanup required because of smoke and water damage, the classes will be remote from Feb. 23-27.
Students and staff were evacuated during the first period of the day, just before 9 a.m. Students were dismissed for the day, but if students left any personal items in the school, those items were available for pick-up Friday from 1 – 3:30 p.m. and Monday from 8-10 a.m. in the band room.
“We wanted to thank our Murray Fire Department, Murray City Police Department, Murray High Faculty, staff and our student body for their tremendous response during today’s fire that occurred at Murray High School,” the school district said.

The school district said that “this situation is extremely fluid,” and that it will send updates as they become available.
This is a breaking news story, and will be updated with more information.
