One person killed in multiple-vehicle crash that caught fire on I-80

SALT LAKE CITY – One person is dead after five vehicles crashed on Interstate 80 near Salt Lake City Thursday night.
The vehicles involved were traveling westbound on I-80 near 7200 W., when they crashed at approximately 7:42 p.m., according to the Department of Public Safety.
The Department reported the chain-like collision began when a pickup truck rear-ended another vehicle, “causing both of those vehicles to catch fire.” Then, three other vehicles collided with the original crash site.

The driver of the vehicle that was rear-ended, a 42-year-old man from Tooele, was reportedly killed. The driver of the pickup truck, a 33-year-old man, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, according to DPS.
Westbound lanes are closed while crews work to clear the wreckage, which were estimated to reopen at approximately 9 p.m., according to a post on X from the Utah Department of Transportation.
