Large mulch fire burns for hours overnight in Woods Cross

WOOD CROSS — A large brush fire that broke out late Monday and took firefighters hours to fend off, into the early hours Tuesday morning, restarted Tuesday afternoon according to the South Davis Metro Fire Department.
Deputy Chief Jeff Larsen told KSL that the initial fire did not rekindle. Rather, he said that the fire never burned out to begin with.
Larsen told KSL the fire began in a pile of mulch at approximately 10:30 p.m. near 1550 W. 500 South in Woods Cross.
About 30 firefighters responded alongside Larsen to the initial call, with others from Farmington and Layton, too.
Larsen South Davis Metro Fire officials monitored the fire all day, and that wind will determine when the fire is fully out.
“It’ll die down and then it will find some new … some heavy timber inside of … 20 feet below the surface, and then it will kick back up a little bit. Then it will go back down,” Larsen said.
Just before 6 a.m., Larsen said there were no buildings threatened nearby, and the flames were contained. He estimated residents nearby would likely continue to see smoke for hours afterward.
