SANTA CLARA — One person was killed and another was wounded after a late-night home shooting Thursday, according to the Santa Clara-Ivins Police Department.
At approximately 11 p.m., reports of gunshots near Santa Clara View Drive and Circle Drive were received by dispatch. Officers responded and found two people had been shot, and the first was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was later identified by the Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety Department as 44-year-old Heather Ann Barela.
The second victim’s injuries were not life-threatening and they were transferred to the St. George Regional Hospital by emergency medical responders. An update on their condition was not provided.
“Initial reports suggested that an unknown assailant had entered the home during a suspected home invasion, shooting the deceased victim before fleeing the scene,” police said.
During the initial investigation, police took precautionary action by ordering local residents to shelter in place while officers searched for the suspected shooter. After further investigation and “interviews with individuals at the residence,” detectives learned the shooter was not unknown to them and the order was lifted.
It was not made clear if the shooter entered the residence unauthorized or if the person was already inside the home before the shots were fired.
“As a result of the investigation, one individual has been arrested and charged with murder, felony discharge of a weapon, and aggravated assault,” police said.
The Santa Clara-Ivins Public Safety Department said the suspect was a family member, but they wouldn’t be releasing their name because they were a minor.
