SALT LAKE CITY — A 19-year-old was arrested and accused of DUI on Sunday after police say he drove on Pony Express Parkway in Utah County at 115 mph, eventually crashing into a parked car.

A police booking affidavit said Dencel Leonardo Olvera was driving. According to police, an officer with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office was following a car going south when the driver took off.

“The vehicle ‘blacked out’ by turning off all their lights and took off at a high rate of speed,” the affidavit said.

The officer estimated the car hit 115 mph, and the affidavit said the officer went 110 mph to try to catch up.

Eventually, the car crashed into a parked vehicle, still without its headlights on, the affidavit said. Police say the driver then got out and ran.

According to the affidavit, police detained a female passenger, then eventually found Olvera in the area.

Police searched Olvera’s car, and the affidavit said it smelled like marijuana. Police found THC vapes and other signs of marijuana use, according to the document. Police then ordered Olvera to do a sobriety test.

“At the conclusion of the tests I determined (Olvera) was unsafe to operate a motor vehicle and placed him under arrest,” the affidavit said.

Olvera was taken to the hospital and then to the Utah County Jail. He’s accused of misdemeanors for DUI, reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, failing to comply with duties at a crash and driving without an interlock system.
