TAYLORSVILLE — Two people are in serious condition after being shot in Taylorsville, prompting at least 10 schools to be placed on “hold” protocol, according to police and Granite School District.

One person was detained for questioning as of approximately 12:30 p.m., according to the West Valley City Police Department.

Sgt. Roxeanne Vainuku said the shooting occurred in Taylorsville and one victim was “dropped off at a school” there at some point. They later came to a medical center in West Valley City for treatment. Police later confirmed shots were fired near the area of 3860 Birmingham Drive.

It was not made clear if the victims were students or what events occurred before the shooting.

A full list of schools placed on hold was provided by Granite School District:

  • Taylorsville Elementary
  • Fremont Elementary
  • Granger Elementary
  • Vista Elementary
  • Plymouth Elementary
  • Eisenhower Junior High
  • West Lake Junior High STEM
  • Granger High School
  • Taylorsville High
  • Roosevelt Continuation School

“These incidents are not suspected to be related to the school in any way and the protocols have been issued out of an abundance of caution,” Granite School District said.

The district further advised parents not to come to the school, “as they are not able to let you in the building.”

The district provided an update just after noon, saying all schools other than Taylorsville Elementary, Granger High School and Roosevelt Continuation School were released from the hold protocol. Another update was provided just before 1 p.m., saying Taylorsville Elementary was the only school still on hold.
