SALT LAKE CITY — A man was taken into police custody on Wednesday, accused of shooting and killing a man in Sugar House on Sunday.

A probable cause statement for the incident says 36-year-old Nathaniel Douglas Stockton is accused of numerous felonies for the death of 57-year-old Steve Kallas, who was found dead with a gunshot wound outside his RV in the area of 2100 South and Lincoln Street.

The statement says investigators obtained surveillance video from the scene that showed a gray Toyota Camry park behind Kallas’ RV at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday. Police said a man got out of the car and fired multiple shots into the RV.

Kallas then approached the shooter and sprayed him with bear spray, the statement said. Surveillance footage showed the shooter fired several more shots at Kallas, then he left the area. Kallas was found about an hour and a half later.

According to the statement, detectives on the case were tipped off that Kallas owed money to a man named Nathaniel Stockton. Cell phone and GPS data reportedly placed Stockton at the scene of the shooting, and police say he drives a gray Camry.

Stockton was arrested in a parking lot in West Jordan on Wednesday, according to the statement. The statement said police found firearms inside his vehicle, consistent with evidence found at the scene of the shooting.

Nathaniel admitted that (Kallas) owed him a specific amount of money and that (Kallas) was in debt to him. Nathaniel admitted to being upset with (Kallas), however stated that he, his vehicle, and his phone were with him and that he was never at the homicide scene during that time,” the statement said.

Stockton allegedly told police that he didn’t know why GPS data showed him at the scene of the murder, but that “he consumes narcotics that cause him to go days without sleep,” and he didn’t remember where he had been.

Stockton is accused of aggravated murder, 10 counts of felony discharge of a firearm, attempted aggravated arson and prohibited dangerous weapon conduct, all felonies.
