Stepfather arrested after initial reports claimed shooting death of 18-year-old was ‘accidental’

BREAKING UPDATE — The stepfather in this case was arrested Wednesday at approximately 3 p.m., and was being booked on suspected manslaughter charges in connection to the shooting death of his stepson.
“His name is Joseph Lee. He’s been arrested for manslaughter and he’s being transported to Salt Lake County Jail for processing,” said Riverton police Chief Shane Ketter.

RIVERTON — After an 18-year-old man was shot and killed inside a Riverton home on Tuesday, initial police reports suggested it was a “tragic accident.” On Wednesday, Riverton police clarified, saying the case was still under investigation, and possible charges could be filed.
On Tuesday at approximately 3 p.m. near 13800 South and Kessler Peak Drive, police reported that a 46-year-old man accidentally shot his son in a home. On Wednesday, Chief Shane Taylor clarified that the man was actually his stepfather.
Police at the scene said they were told the shooting was an accident — the Glock handgun discharged, hitting the teen and ultimately killing him.
The stepfather was questioned by police, who said he was cooperating with the investigation on Tuesday evening.
On Wednesday, Taylor said police had obtained a warrant that helped them obtain footage from inside the home.
Investigators still needed to review the evidence in the case, but Taylor said charges could be filed, and it was not conclusively an accident.
