PROVO — An Eagle Mountain man was sentenced to prison on Monday for two felonies stemming from a 2023 road rage crash.

Matheson faces zero to 5 years in prison for each count, along with a fine of up to $10,000.

On June 4, 2023, police said Matheson lost control of his truck during a road rage altercation on state Route 73. He ultimately crashed head-on into an uninvolved Porsche.

Engaged in road rage

Peterson Matheson pleaded guilty to manslaughter in November. Prosecutors said he and another driver were engaged in road rage back and forth on state Route 73 in Eagle Mountain when Matheson collided with a car driving in the other direction. Two people inside that car were killed.

Before a packed courtroom on Monday, the judge reduced the severity of the charges from second to third-degree felonies.

He was sentenced to zero to five years in prison on each count, to be served consecutively.

“Back to normal”

Rodney Salm and Michaela “Mischa” Himmleberger were in the Porsche, who were out for a joyride together. Both died in the crash.

Peter Salm, the brother of Rodney Salm, said he feels justice has been served.

“I think the family wants to kind of get back to a normal life and doing what we need to do,” said Peter Salm.

Peter Salm spoke before the court on Monday alongside Rodney’s sister and Himmleberger’s sister.

“I have no ill will against anybody. It’s just a tragedy and we’d like to move forward… From our perspective, it’s been a long ride, and we’re kind of happy to get off [the ride],” Peter Salm said.

Matheson’s dad also spoke — in addition to the state defense and each side’s attorneys.

Peterson Matheson spoke to the court too, and took responsibility for his actions.

The court set a restitution hearing for April 7.
