Man arrested after crashing, barricading inside vehicle in Heber, police say

HEBER — A man was taken into police custody in Heber on July Fourth after police say he drove recklessly before crashing on Main Street, then barricaded himself inside his vehicle.

A probable cause statement for the incident said police initially received reports Friday that a vehicle was driving into oncoming traffic on state Route 40, heading toward Heber from Park City. Then, an accident with injuries was reported at 100 S. Main Street.

The statement identified 32-year-old Stockton Charles Harlow McBride as the driver. It said when police arrived at the crash, McBride “told (police) that he had a firearm and to stay away from the vehicle and to not open the door.”

“Due to that, several more law enforcement officers responded to the scene. The male individual did not exit the vehicle,” the statement said.

Police said McBride appeared to barricade himself inside the vehicle. Officers cleared everyone off the road and out of harms way, then attempted to make contact with McBride over a loadspeaker, the statement said.

McBride eventually did exit his vehicle, but refused to put his hands up. Officers used a Taser and took the man into custody, the statement said. He was taken to the hospital before being booked into jail by the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office.

The statement said police on scene found drug paraphernalia in McBride’s vehicle that tested positive for meth. Police also reviewed security footage of the crash, and said he had been traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a stop light.

“He had a complete and wanton disregard for the safety of others in the Heber City area, as there was a community event in the near block to where he had crashed into another vehicle,” the statement said.

McBride is accused of reckless driving, DUI, possession of drug paraphernalia, possessing a controlled substance, interfering with police and refusing a chemical test.
