SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department has launched an interactive crime map that gives community members access to crime data across the city and from a few other locations.

In a press release, the SLCPD said this new tool is part of its “commitment to transparency, accountability, and community-informed policing.”

“In policing, transparency builds trust,” SLCPD Chief Brian Redd wrote in the press release. “By offering an easy-to-use crime map, we’re helping our community members stay informed and engaged. This is about building stronger partnerships between our residents, business community, and police.”

Using the map, community members can view crime data for up to six months prior. It updates on the fourth of every month.

The SLCPD said the data uses “anonymized intersections” instead of exact addresses to share awareness while also protecting privacy. When the exact location of a crime is unknown, the location where it was reported will be shown.

It will also include crimes that occurred outside of Salt Lake City’s boundaries that the SLCPD responded to.

According to the press release, the map has several filters, including the date, community council boundaries, violent vs. property crime and crime type. The SLCPD said it is important to note that the filters use “internal methodology,” so this database could differ from others.

The map will not replace official crime statistics, comprehensive case investigations or media statements, the SLCPD said.
