Kouri Richins’ attorneys request trial move to Salt Lake County

SALT LAKE CITY — Attorneys representing Kouri Richins, who is accused of killing her husband in 2022, have requested her trial be moved from Summit County to Salt Lake County.
In court documents, Richins’ attorneys cite Rule 29 of the Utah Rules of Criminal Procedure, the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments and Article I section 12 of the Utah State Constitution as reasons to move the trial.
They point to several articles reporting Richins’ arrest and alleged actions as evidence of a “media campaign” that “vilifies” her.
Attorneys said most reporting, including local and national media coverage, podcasts, Facebook posts and media statements, all have “almost exclusively highlighted the prosecution’s theory of the case, even when it is incorrect.”
Richins’ attorneys claim these forms of media “hold greater interest in Summit County than elsewhere.” They said the trial must be moved so Richins can have a fair and impartial jury and a fair trial.
At this time, the court has yet to respond and Richins’ trial is set to take place on April 28.
