LAYTON, Utah — Layton police said they confiscated over a pound of cocaine and more than 10,000 fentanyl pills from a man in Layton on Thursday.

The probable cause statement said police were called to a man possibly intoxicated and stumbling in a Target parking lot.

When officers arrived, they found him near a car with the doors open and saw drug paraphernalia, as well as blue M30 pills strewn about the inside of the vehicle. The vehicle was identified as a 2004 Nissan Sentra with California plates. The report said these pills are often found to be counterfeit and contain fentanyl.

Officers said the man showed “obvious signs of drug use” and detained him.

After searching his car, police found what they believe to be cocaine and the M30 pills. The man admitted to police he was driving from California to distribute the cocaine, right after he was read his Miranda rights according to the probable cause statement.

The statement further explained that “he was taking the distributable amount of drugs to a female in Utah, and had her information saved on a cellular device.”

Police drafted a warrant and searched the car further, finding over a pound of cocaine and over 10,000 fentanyl pills.

“The quantities of pills and cocaine are a distributable amount,” the report said. “Also in the vehicle was drug paraphernalia consistent with drug distribution.”

Police identified the man as 26-year-old Carlos Asuncion Magana. He was booked into jail for possession of drugs and the intent to distribute.
