Man in jail for allegedly stabbing woman, assaulting police officer

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police say a 30-year-old man was taken into custody early Monday for allegedly stabbing a woman and assaulting a police officer.

Police say they were notified at 3:29 a.m. of a stabbing in the area of 641 W. North Temple. 

According to a press release from SLCPD, the woman suffered a serious, but non-life-threatening injury. Police also say the victim knows the suspect from a previous romantic relationship.

The suspect, who has been identified as Phillip James Wilkins, refused to cooperate with authorities. After a chase, authorities took him into custody. However, the suspect began to fight back and allegedly tried to bite an officer.

Once in custody, Wilkins was allegedly found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and a taser. 

He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon. He was also booked for investigation of one count each of committing a domestic violence act in the presence of a child, destruction of property, use or possession of drugs. Additionally, he was also booked for investigation of failing to stop at the command of a police officer, assaulting a peace officer, sex offender registration violation and damaging or interrupting a communication device.
