Man sentenced after carjacking a USPS truck and standing off with police

SALT LAKE CITY — A man was sentenced to 30 months in prison after stealing a U.S. Postal Service truck and fleeing from police in the vehicle over a year ago.
On Feb. 5, 2024, Wilber Castellanos Hernandez, 33, threatened a postal employee with a knife and stole the employee’s service truck on 594 N. Redwood Road in Salt Lake City, according to court documents.
“Hernandez was tracked using GPS technology and stopped by law enforcement before he was subsequently taken into custody,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Utah said in a press release on Wednesday.

A few days later, Hernandez was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of carjacking, mail theft, and theft of government property.
Court documents indicated Hernandez was going to take part in a jury trial, but in April, he pleaded guilty to the carjacking charge.
On Tuesday, Hernandez was sentenced to 30 months in prison along with 36 months’ supervised release and was ordered to pay $2,828.89 in damages.
According to court documents, Hernandez was an undocumented Mexican citizen and had warrants for his arrest in 2023.
Documents from Hernandez’s public defender indicate that Hernandez will return to Mexico when his “sentence ends and he is deported.”
