SALT LAKE CITY — One person has died and two people are in critical condition after being injured at former President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said during a press conference that Corey Comperatore was shot and killed at the campaign rally.

Comperatore’s wife told Shapiro that she wanted people to know that he died a hero.

“Corey dove on his family to protect them last night at this rally,” Shapiro said. “Corey was the very best of us. May his memory be a blessing.”

The governor added how the shooting on Saturday came as a shock for the Butler community and the country.

“Political disagreements can never ever be addressed through violence,” the governor said. “We need to use a peaceful political process to settle those differences.”

Shapiro stated that the two other victims injured in the shooting are in critical condition when he asked that people join him in a prayer.

“I spoke to the family of one of [the victims], the other [family] left a detailed message,” Shapiro said. “I’m not going to get into their status. That will be shared by the Pennsylvania State Police, and or the family later today.”

The governor refused to answer questions about the ongoing investigation, saying he is trusting the information will come from the FBI and the Pennsylvania State Police in the near future.

Shapiro said he has not spoken directly to former President Donald Trump. He said he has wished the former president well through statements on Saturday.

He added that he did speak directly to President Joe Biden, who called the governor to make sure the state had all the resources they needed.

The governor has directed that flags be flown at half-staff in Comperatore’s memory in Pennsylvania.
