LOGAN, Utah — The man fatally shot by Logan police on Wednesday was suspected of trying to meet with an underage female.
The Logan Police Department said that Adam Philips, age 33, thought he was communicating with an underage girl when he agreed to meet at the Denzil Stewart Nature Park
But it was an undercover police officer who’d been posing as a child that Philips met with, instead.
Police said that Philips resisted arrest, produced a gun, and fired at the officers who then returned fire and killed Philps.
Logan police said the shooting happened near 700 E. and 100 S. in Logan.
“Despite immediate life-saving efforts by officers on scene the individual was pronounced dead by medical personnel,” Logan police said in a press release issued Wednesday.
The shooting injured two of the officers involved and they have since been released from the hospital.
The Northern Utah Critical Incident Protocol Team is heading the investigation. The officer who shot the individual has been placed on administrative leave.
KSL TV’s Debbie Worthen told KSL NewsRadio that a witness said he heard several small gun shots, followed by larger shots.
“By the time he arrived there was a lot of law enforcement on scene … and by that point it was calm,” Worthen said.
