Police: Missing 12-year-old found safe in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — A 12-year-old girl who disappeared after summer school at Glendale Middle School on Monday has been found safe, Salt Lake City police said early Wednesday.
In a press release, the SLCPD said investigators determined that the girl had run away with the help of her 13-year-old boyfriend. Police found no evidence of kidnapping and said the case was “not considered a criminal matter.”
The girl had been found safe and uninjured just before 4 a.m. Wednesday at her boyfriend’s home in Pleasant Grove. According to the press release, the girl confirmed to police that she ran away from home.
Her mother told KSL TV the girl always calls on her way home from summer school, but on Monday, she received no phone call. The missing 12-year-old didn’t answer calls from her mother, and after her mother’s third attempt, it appeared someone turned the phone off.
Family members canvassed the neighborhood and found security videos possibly showing the missing girl being abducted on a Salt Lake City street. Police verified they also obtained copies of those security videos, but couldn’t confirm the girl in the video was the missing child.
The SLCPD’s press release confirmed that the person caught running down a street on security footage was in fact the girl, along with her boyfriend.
Salt Lake City police said officers “worked the case around the clock” to find the missing girl, in a tweet sent at 4:39 a.m. announcing her recovery.
