Romney: Trump brought charges upon himself, is innocent until proven guilty

WASHINGTON D.C. — In a news release on Friday, Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah said former President Trump is entitled to the presumption of innocence in the wake of reports claiming the former president will be indicted.

But Romney also said that the U.S. Justice Department had given the former president “time and opportunity to avoid charges that would not generally have been afforded to others.”

This indictment is related to an investigation into classified documents reportedly found at the former president’s home in Florida. According to ABC News, President Trump’s legal team has received a summons to appear next week at a federal courtroom in Miami.

The former president declared his innocence on social media Thursday night.

“Mr. Trump brought these charges upon himself,” Sen. Romney’s statement continued, “by not only taking classified documents but by refusing to simply return them when given numerous opportunities to do so.

“These allegations are serious and if proven, would be consistent with his other actions offensive to the national interest, such as …  failing to defend the Capitol from violent attack and insurrection.”

Citing unnamed sources, ABC News reports President Trump faces multiple charges including conspiracy and obstruction of justice.
