SALT LAKE CITY – A man wanted for aggravated assault was taken into custody Sunday after police warned the public that he was “armed and dangerous” near Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
Salt Lake City police released an urgent warning to the public at approximately 12:15 p.m., telling people to be on the lookout for Lovell Grant, 38, and to avoid all contact. Shortly after the alert went out, Sgt. Greg Wilking with SLCPD later confirmed they had taken him into custody.
The manhunt started after Grant fought with two people in a residence near 600 South 540 East, one of whom he was romantically involved with. Police say Grant lived out of state.
Police said the incident began when Grant and a woman argued over Grant having a gun. As the argument escalated, a man opened his bedroom door and saw Grant allegedly grab the woman’s hand and bend it backward.
When the woman said she would call the police, Grant allegedly took her phone and threw it. She told the man to call 911. As he turned on his phone, Grant forced open his door and wrapped his arm around the man’s neck, “causing him to start losing consciousness at which time (the man) grabbed a nearby knife and started stabbing Lovell in the side in an attempt to get Lovell to stop the assault,” according to the probable cause statement.
Grant grabbed the knife and attempted to stab him in the neck, causing cuts to the man’s hands as he tried to block the blade, according to police.
The woman entered and started hitting the suspect with a lamp, and Grant allegedly grabbed both victims before releasing them. The man saw Grant allegedly grab a rifle from the kitchen and tried to close the bedroom door, but Grant forced it open again. Both victims ran out the back door as Grant fired a shot in their direction, according to the probable cause statement.
Once SWAT confirmed Grant was not in the residence, they began searching and found him shortly after.
Police said two TVs belonging to the victims were also damaged at some point during the incident. The victims told officers the TVs were intact before they fled the residence, leaving the suspect still inside.
Details on the conditions of the victims have not been released.
