SANDY  — A Sandy woman is under arrest for DUI after police said she was responsible for a hitting a mailbox with children in the car, and leaving the scene.

At approximately 6:15 p.m. on Monday, Sandy police responded to a call about a hit and run on a stone mailbox.

Witnesses said they saw a black Ford SUV hit the mailbox then flee the scene, leaving behind a bumper. According to police, the witnesses also saw the driver pull into a residence.

In a statement, police said they went to the address where the suspect wound up and spoke with Kerri Housley, 32, the owner and driver of the vehicle.

Housley told police she wasn’t aware she had to report the incident to the police and that she was on her way to a parent teacher conference. Housley also told police that she had her three young children, ages nine, seven, and five, with her in the car.

During the conversation, police said they observed several signs of intoxication including slurred speech.

On first inspection of the vehicle, a black 2019 Ford Expedition, police noticed a flat front tire, heavy damage to the front end, and a missing front bumper.

When questioned by the officers, Housley said she had never been in a crash before. She reportedly said she worked as a preschool teacher and hadn’t had anything to drink. But when officers performed three different sobriety tests, she was unable to perform them correctly.

At that point, according to the statement from police, Housley was arrested for DUI. On further inspection of the vehicle an open container of whiskey was found.

According to police records, in a preliminary breath test Housley tested positive for alcohol at 0.364% BAC, more than seven times Utah’s legal limit of 0.05%.
