SARATOGA SPRINGS — An 8-year-old boy was found dead alongside his mother, who was in “extremely critical” condition, inside their home on Friday, according to Saratoga Springs police.

Police later identified the two victims as Eli Painter, 8, and his mother Jessica Lyman, 44. It was apparent when they were found that they had been shot.

On the following Thursday, police confirmed Lyman had died in the hospital on Monday.

According to Assistant Police Chief Bill Robertson, two other children, a 17-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, were also in the house when police arrived. Their names were not released. Robertson said the teen girl had just arrived home and found her mom and brother unconscious, and called 911.

Sometime before 10:30 a.m., police responded to the call on Willowbrook Lane in Saratoga Springs. When police arrived, a medical team found Eli and his mother.

Lyman was airlifted to a nearby hospital.

After Lyman was removed from the home, it took a few hours for a warrant to be approved for police to get inside the house and process the scene. While they waited, officers sealed off the home as a crime scene, and “detectives, investigative forensic technicians, victim advocates and the medical examiner were then summoned to the scene.”

When KSL TV arrived at the scene, family members were waiting outside. They left shortly before noon.

As of Sunday, police said the two teens who were inside the home were interviewed and other family members were interviewed or were scheduled to be. Detectives were still working to identify possible suspects.
