Search for vehicle led to suspect being shot by an officer

SALT LAKE CITY — After a series of events with the Salt Lake City Police Department, a suspect was shot by a police officer early Saturday around 12:40 a.m.
SLCPD said before the incident occurred, at 12:10 a.m. on the same night, Utah Highway Patrol reported seeing a Dodge Ram with vehicle-equipment violations. UHP said the vehicle was also speeding and drove away before they were able to pull the driver over.
The trooper who reported the truck later came across the vehicle at 5650 W. 500 South, according to a press release. The trooper then requested the SLCPD to search the area.
When police arrived at the scene, they began searching for suspects related to the vehicle. That’s when police say an “officer fired at least one shot,” leading to a suspect sustaining a non-life-threatening injury.
The suspect was taken to the hospital after being treated at the scene by law enforcement, according to police.
Police said two other suspects were detained in relation to the incidents. Police reported having searched the area for more suspects involved using both air and ground services and did not find any other suspects.
No others were reported to be injured.
Police said an Officer-Involved-Critical Incident protocol was activated when the shooting occurred and the officer who shot the suspect is now on paid administrative leave due to the protocol.
According to SLCPD, this case is still under investigation.
