Man in critical condition after being stabbed in the neck at Pioneer Park, police say

SALT LAKE CITY — One man is in police custody after he allegedly stabbed another man twice in Pioneer Park Sunday night, police say.
According to the Salt Lake City Police Department, the stabbing happened at approximately 8 p.m. near Pioneer Park and the Downtown 360 Apartments.
When first responders arrived, they found a 74-year-old man with a laceration on his neck and left bicep. Medical crews transported him to a local hospital in critical condition, according to a police affidavit.
Witnesses told police that a man, later identified as Alex Jones, 33, “came up from behind the victim with a knife and stabbed him in the neck area,” the affidavit stated. Jones then fled on foot.
One of the witnesses chased Jones, thinking he had stolen something and was trying to escape.
According to the affidavit, the witness caught up to Jones and told him to give up the items he stole. Jones denied stealing anything and handed over a wallet to the witness, and Jones was let go by the witness.
The witness gave the wallet to the police, and it was discovered that it was Jones’ wallet.
Police reported finding Jones an hour after the alleged stabbing and took him into custody without further incident. According to the affidavit, Jones was found with a “blood like substance” on the right side of his face and both hands.
After being read his Miranda rights, Jones told police that he was hit by a metal pipe, but did not see who did.
During his interview with police, the affidavit stated that Jones was “making nonsensical statements stating that he sees demons and didn’t remember much of what he was doing or even where he was at when he was hit.”
Jones denied being involved in any fight at Pioneer Park or stabbing anyone.
According to the affidavit, Jones was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony.
