Jordan High student killed in Sandy crosswalk by school bus

Police in Sandy were called to an accident scene around 1 p.m. on Friday, where they found a teenager had been hit by a bus while she walked in a crosswalk (Michael Locklear, KSL TV)

SANDY, Utah – A 15-year-old girl, a student at Jordan High School, was killed in a crosswalk on Friday when she was hit by a school bus in Sandy. There were 16 students from Hillcrest High School on the bus.
Sgt. Greg Moffitt with Sandy Police said the accident happened at 8375 South (Princeton Drive) and State Street in Sandy.
Moffitt said the student was hit in a crosswalk around 1 p.m. on Friday.
When Sandy officers arrived they found that the victim had died on the scene from her injuries.
The Canyons School District is coordinating with the students who were on the bus.
“They removed all the kids from the bus, counseling services are going to be provided for them,” “Moffit said.
On Friday afternoon, Canyons School District Superintendent Dr. Rick Robins released the following statement about the fatal crash:
Canyons District sends our heartfelt condolences to the family of the student, as well as the student’s friends, teachers, and school staff who will struggle with the pain and loss of a loved one. As Superintendent, I want our community to know that counseling services will be provided to students, faculty, and staff who are struggling with difficult emotions following the incident.
Moffitt said they are currently working on accident reconstruction at the scene. They don’t yet know what led to the school bus hitting the teen.
“That’s part of the investigation that is ongoing,” he said. “That will be determined at a later time.”
