SWAT standoff underway in Salt Lake City to capture fugitve

SALT LAKE CITY — A SWAT standoff is underway in Salt Lake City to take a fugitive into custody, police say.
In a post on X, Salt Lake City police say the incident is near 1500 S. Main Street. Police also say Main Street is closed from Kensington Avenue to Bryan Avenue.
Officers are working with our SWAT team to safely take a fugitive into custody near 1500 South Main Street.

Det. Beebe, with the Salt Lake City Police Department, says the incident began when an individual fled from officers. Eventually, the individual ended up barricading themselves inside a room at the Main Street Motel.
He says the investigation is still in the early stages.
“But ultimately, for the safety of all parties involved, our SWAT team was called out,” Beebe said in a statement on X. “As well as our crisis negotiations team, who are all highly-trained in dealing with situations similar to this.”

Police say negotiators are working to resolve the SWAT standoff peacefully. However, they say the individual is refusing to communicate.
