Teen hospitalized after being shot in Big Bear Park, police say

SANDY — Police are investigating what led to a 17-year-old being shot in a Sandy park Thursday afternoon.
Sgt. Aymee Race with the Unified Police Department told KSL that at approximately 5 p.m., officers responded to a shots fired call at Big Bear Park on 930 E. 9630 South.
Witnesses told Unified police officers that two vehicles left the area at a high rate of speed when shots were fired. Officers reported finding shell casings at the scene.
Race said about 20 minutes later, UPD was informed that a teenager arrived at a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
UPD believes the shooting is connected and gang-related. Race said the public is not in danger, but people should avoid Big Bear Park as officers investigate the crime scene.
Other police agencies are working with UPD to identify the suspects.
