SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Police Department responded to a wrong-way crash in Salt Lake City at 9:36 p.m. near 120 South 5600 West. The crash claimed the life of 19-year-old Wilber Cardenas.
Upon arrival, officers discovered two damaged vehicles—a silver Infiniti that had been overturned and a red Kia with front-end damage. The Salt Lake City Fire Department rescued the driver of the Kia, transporting them to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
On-scene medical teams requested a life-flight helicopter for the driver of the Infiniti, Wilber Cardenas, but he died on-scene despite emergency life-saving efforts.
Police say that early investigations say that Cardenas was traveling north in the southbound lanes. Police say he swerved just before the crash, which they believe led to the collision with the oncoming Kia.
Authorities say that alcohol may have played a role in Cardenas’ driving.
