Fire at Tooele landfill keeps students and others indoors

TOOELE, Utah — Students attending school in the Tooele Valley were brought inside on Wednesday after fire broke out at a nearby landfill.
On Facebook, the Tooele County School District said students were brought inside after the Tooele County Health Department reported poor air quality. The air quality was impacted by flames at the Tooele County Landfill.
According to the Tooele County Health Department, “smoke from this fire could cause unsafe concentrations of particulates.”
Health officials asked schools not to have recess outside and advised people in sensitive groups to remain indoors.
At 3:18 p.m., Mountain Standard Time, the Utah Department of Environmental Quality noted that air quality in Tooele County was in the “moderate” range. Particulate matter, or particle pollution, registered at 12 µg/m3, or 12 micrograms per cubic meter.
