OREM Timpanogos High School senior Coco Harward knew that for some classmates, the high cost of prom was a barrier too big to overcome. So she took matters into her own hands, and a prom revolution was born.

It started with a few texts and social media posts, asking friends for gently used prom dresses and suits. The response was overwhelming.

Harward saw an opportunity, pitched the idea to her school, and together with members of the student group Sources of Strength, brought the “prom closet” to life.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the response,” Harward said. “I can’t count the number of people who’ve reached out to say how much it means to them. It really comes down to recognizing needs that may not affect you directly — and then doing something about it.”

The prom closet, housed in a repurposed storage space in the school library, feels more like a boutique than a borrow-and-go. Harward, who also works as a teacher’s assistant in the library, helped paint the walls, install clothing racks, and hang curtains to create private dressing rooms — giving students the full shopping experience, free of charge.

How does the prom closet work?

The concept is simple: students use their school library card to check out formalwear for up to a month. No cost, no stress — just prom-ready magic.

Senior Ashlyn Hight, one of Harward’s classmates, said the project will have a lasting impact well beyond their final high school dance.

“This room will still be here after we graduate,” Hight said. “I’m so excited for students who maybe can’t afford a dress to walk in, find something they love, and just feel beautiful. That’s so meaningful.”

And it’s not just about prom night. Sophomore Izzy Brown pointed out that the closet can be used year-round for other important moments.

“These outfits can be worn for job interviews, banquets — really any event where someone needs to dress up,” Brown said.

The project has inspired a ripple effect of kindness and action throughout the school community.

“I’m so proud of Coco,” Hight said. “She brings this incredible energy and light to everything she does. She sees how things could be better and actually does something about it. This prom closet is just one example of that.”

To expand their reach, the team created an Instagram account for updates, to give donations, and to connect with the community. The official grand opening is set for April 21, and the invitation is open to students from nearby high schools as well.

For many, prom is a once-in-a-lifetime memory. Thanks to Harward and her team, it’s a memory that now feels more possible — and more magical — for everyone.
